As a teacher this is an area that I wish I could have parents come to class for me to teach them. Over the 19 years I've been teaching, I've been amazed and saddened during parent meetings when I hear how parents work on studying and homework with their child and think they are doing it well.

This blog is going to address studying with a review sheet and/or notes for a test and/or quiz.

first tip:   Please do not send your child to their room and tell them to study their review sheet or 

    notes.  Most children will think they're studying but will waste a lot of time daydreaming.

   Instead, in the car or at home, tell your child to read the review sheet or notes out loud    to  you two times. (If your child struggles you'll need to increase the number.)

second tip:  After they've read it out loud, take the review sheet (or notes) and call out the long part of  the note or term.  If they don't know the answer? Give the answer to them and have them say it.  Then ask the same item again.  If they get it right, mark that note with a star or dot or whatever. If they're having major trouble have them recite the note out loud 2 times. Then go on.  Do the same thing for each item on sheet or notes.  As you work your way through the sheet go back to ones they didn't know after you've asked 2 or 3 others.  

Example:  Child didn't know #3 on review sheet.  You had them repeat answer until they could answer you correctly.  You move on to # 4 then #5 then GO BACK to #3.  

third tip:  Once you've went through the whole sheet or notes, give it back to child and have him/her read out loud 2 times the notes you marked and then repeat tip 2.

fourth tip: I usually have my daughter read the review sheet out loud to me as I take her to 

school the next morning.

This technique has worked very well for me as a teacher in the classroom and as a mom studying with my own child.  Obviously, it works best if you study over the review sheet or notes as your child gets them instead of waiting until the night before the test or quiz!
